Westside Multimodal Transit Center - Phase 2
VIA Received Finding of No Significant Impact(FONSI)
The proposed WSMMTC Phase 2 project includes the construction of a new transit plaza
just east of the current WSMMTC Phase 1 project.
It will be strategically located in the Cattleman Square Historic District near
the I-10 and I-35 interchange to maximize transit accessibility and to support the
revitalization of the Westside of downtown San Antonio. It is bounded by W. Houston,
N. Medina, N. Frio, and W. Travis Streets.
VIA’s Long Range Comprehensive Transportation Plan (2011) identified the need for
more transit facilities, better transit accessibility and new modes of transit.
Portions of the service area were identified as lacking transit facilities that
would enable more secure, efficient and convenient passenger experiences. Currently,
there is no dedicated passenger transfer facility for radial bus routes that converge
in downtown San Antonio.
Purpose
The project is anticipated to improve transit accessibility, connect existing and
future transit modes, and spur economic growth. Completing the WSMMTC and introducing
additional modes of travel will increase the accessibility and activity in the surrounding
neighborhood and will connect fixed-route riders to faster, more efficient forms
of local and regional transportation. It will also lessen bus congestion in the
core of downtown and provide a safer, more customer-friendly way for users to transfer.
Phase 2 Schedule
VIA has prepared a Supplemental Environmental Assessment of the
WSMMTC Phase 2. The Federal Transit Administration is the lead Federal agency for
this project to assess the potential impacts this project may have had to the human
and natural environments.
Throughout this assessment process VIA will engage the public through open houses,
community presentations and other activities aimed at sharing information and gathering
feedback.
Supplemental Environmental Assessment
The Supplemental Environmental Assessment (EA) for VIA Metropolitan Transit’s Westside
Multimodal Transit Center Phase II is complete, and VIA recieved a Finding of No Significant Impact. Phase 2 of the proposed
project includes the construction of a new transit plaza located in the Cattleman
Square Historic District near the I-10 and I-35 interchange, bounded by W. Houston,
N. Medina, N. Frio, and W. Travis Streets. The Supplemental EA has been prepared
to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969 and to evaluate
project alternatives and potential environmental consequences associated with these
alternatives. VIA prepared the Supplemental EA document in conjunction with the
Federal Transit Administration (FTA)
