VIA Metropolitan Transit held its annual Bus/Van/Maintenance Roadeo on Saturday, March 6 at Nelson Wolff Stadium, and the winners of this competition will go on to compete in the Texas State Bus Roadeo.
The Roadeo gives VIA employees the chance to showcase their job skills and aptitude. Competitors in the bus and van portions of the Roadeo show off their driving skills by navigating a preset course, and maintenance employees compete to locate and repair planted problems. The winners from VIA’s Roadeo will travel down to Corpus Christi to take part in the state competition held as part of the Texas Transit Association’s Annual Conference, which is scheduled for April 16-21, 2010. Bus and maintenance winners of the state Roadeo will then go on to compete in the International Bus Roadeo to be held in Cleveland, Ohio in conjunction with the American Public Transportation Association’s Bus and Paratransit Conference.
Representing VIA in Corpus Christi are: · Chris Young, Bus Operator · Billy Allen, Van Operator · Phil Davis and a team from Maintenance
In addition to the bus, van, and maintenance contests, VIA also held a Celebrity Roadeo where public officials and local celebrities got the chance to drive a bus through the competition course. There was also a children’s bicycle rodeo, a car show, a vintage bus showcase, and family activities.
