Dump the Pump Day scheduled for June 21

Posted: 6/7/2012

VIA Metropolitan Transit is joining transit agencies across the nation to promote Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 21, a day when people are encouraged to leave their vehicles at home and try public transportation.

The American Public Transportation Association, or APTA, promotes Dump the Pump Day to highlight public transportation as a way for people to reduce transportation costs, fuel consumption, and vehicle emissions.

VIA’s monthly Big Pass allows riders to board any VIA bus or streetcar for an entire month. The pass costs $30 for full fare and $15 for reduced fare (available to qualified individuals). People interested in getting a quick estimate of the cost savings realized from riding the bus can use VIA’s online Commute Calculator. For help planning trips on June 21, riders can use the Personal Trip Planner, or they can call 362-2020.

Keep an eye on VIA’s Facebook page (VIA Transit) in the days leading up to Dump the Pump Day for information on a special promotion that includes the chance to win free bus passes.

VIA has been improving the ride throughout the bus system, but particular amenities added to the agency’s express routes have made the service more attractive to commuters. VIA has placed diesel-electric hybrid buses in service on the express routes, and these vehicles offer additional amenities including on-board wireless internet access, reclining seats, and overhead storage. The agency also adopted a Code of Conduct for passengers that helps promote the safety, comfort, and convenience riders expect from VIA’s services.
